I know it has been quite awhile since many of you have heard from us. I am enclosing the last newsletter we published, which covers the first half of 2015. That is the last newsletter Steve was able to write. This was initially intended to be a Christmas newsletter but time gets away from you sometimes. I know you can all relate…2016 was a year of the highest highs and the lowest lows. While it is not one one I wish to repeat, I am grateful for lessons learned along the way.
In October of 2015 Steve became sick with what he thought was traveler's sickness. He got some medicine from his doctor and continued to travel for work. At the end of October he took an entire suitcase of water with him to India so he wouldn’t get sicker. That worked until he got home. Within 12 hours of his return we were at urgent care with him. It took them a whole battery of tests and almost a month but they finally found the cause. Steve was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer on December 1 2015. The gave him 3 days of very powerful chemotherapy but it didn’t work. He died 6 weeks later on January 14, 2016.
While 2016 did not start out at a good place, we definitely have been blessed!
February - Adam and Benjamin got their driving learner's permits
In April, Brian and Britta welcomed their first child: a girl which they named Evelyn Faye.
June saw the twins finishing high school and were accepted into BYU-Idaho.
In July Matthew and Teal also welcomed a baby girl. She is their 3rd and her name is Aoife (pronounced Ee-fuh).
August was a month with extra blessings. Aaron returned from his two year mission in Los Angeles just in time to participate in the double Eagle court of honor for Adam and Benjamin. Less than two weeks later though, Aaron and Adam headed off to college. Benjamin is on a different school semester track so he won’t start until he returns from his mission.
At the end of September Benjamin and I headed to Utah to spend Stephanie’s birthday with her. Stephanie,Aaron, Adam, Benjamin and I shared the Sunday Morning session of General Conference - in the Conference Center . It was everything I dreamed it would be. Around this same time, I had applied to Costco for a morning stocker position. I had previously worked there as a stocker/pharmacy technician. Openings in the Pharmacy are rare. On the day I interviewed though, someone had just left the Pharmacy. The interviewer asked if I was interested in the position. Was he kidding? Of course I said yes. Yet another tender mercy from the Lord.
November brought something quite unexpected. Kimberly came up from Miami for her baby shower planned for the 19th. Her baby was due December 30. Early that morning Kimber woke to find her water had broken. Zach was still in Miami since dads don’t typically attend baby showers. He caught the earliest flight he could and Everett Steven Burr was born about an hour after his dad arrived at the hospital. Everett was tiny but basically healthy. After 3 weeks in the NICU to give him some time to get stronger, the new little family headed home to Miami. As of this writing, Everett had nearly doubled his birth weight.
December was a bittersweet reunion for our family. At various points in the month almost everyone was home for a few days. We are still trying to find a new normal but we are progressing. 2017 holds many great possibilities and we look forward to the blessings and the challenges.
The Savior has been with us every step of the way. Each member of our family has felt his presence. Steve has been here too. As I finish this letter, it has been exactly one year. I believe we are stronger. I also believe that families are indeed forever and we look forward to being with Steve again someday.
May the New Year be wonderful for you all
With love from The Chidesters:
